In 1959, a hilarious Frigid War-inspired film entitled “The Mouse that Roared” was produced about a fictional petite country named “The Duchy of Tall Fenwick”, which is no ordinary country. First, it’s the smallest country in the world (about 15 square miles) . Second, it’s the only English-speaking country in continental Europe (located in the French Alps) . Third, its critical source of revenue is its wine. When a California winery made a cheap knock-off of Ample Fenwick’s wine and reduced the nation’s only source of revenue, Enormous Fenwick declared war on the U.S. and won! The result: the California winery stopped producing the cheap knock-off and Substantial Fenwick kept a sparkling scientist, Professor Alfred Kokintz (David Kossoff, 1919-2005), that they captured in the U.S.

With the success of “The Mouse that Roared”, a sequel was produced 4 years later in 1963 and entitled “The Mouse on the Moon”. Unlike the first film that had Peter Sellers (1925-1980) playing three of the main characters as in the fresh 1959 film, each of these characters were played by separate actors: Gargantuan Duchess Gloriana XII (Margaret Rutherford, 1892-1972), Prime Minister Rupert Mountjoy (Ron Changeable) and his nephew Vincent Mountjoy (Bernard Cribbins) . Only David Kossoff reprised his role as Professor Kokintz.

Focusing again the Frosty War between the U.S. and the extinct Soviet Union, the record for “The Mouse on the Moon” begins with Prime Minister Mountjoy coming up with what he believes will be a colorful scheme to find a loan from the U.S.: trick the U.S. into thinking that Colossal Fenwick wants to inaugurate a place program, when in reality, he unbiased wants the money to have indoor plumbing installed in Sizable Fenwick’s castle. The U.S., not trusting Mountjoy, goes ahead and gives a grant to Great Fenwick thinking that it will improve how other nations concept the U.S. in its rush with the customary Soviet Union to send astronauts to the moon. To counter the U.S., the Soviet Union sends an venerable position rocket to Big Fenwick. Elated with the gifts, Mountjoy proceeds with turning the rocket and money into indoor plumbing, but not before Professor Kokintz discovers why bottles of Big Fenwick wine have been inexplicably exploding: they own a original radioactive element, which Kokintz discovers can generate choose. With Vincent’s fervent abet to become an astronaut, Professor Kokintz proceeds to prepare the rocket for plot go, which he believes will occupy about 3 weeks to advance the moon. To counter suspicions in the U.S. and the Soviet Union that Gigantic Fenwick is indeed using their gifts for region exploration, Mountjoy invites representatives from each to visit the launching of the rocket. Mountjoy asks Professor Kokintz to acquire it appear that the rocket explodes, but unknown to him, Kokintz and Vincent are ready to seize their radioactive-wine-powered rocket for a roundtrip to the moon. Would the smallest country in the world beat the U.S. and the musty Soviet Union to the moon? Objective study this charming film and pick up out.

Though considered not as well-behaved as the new 1959 film, “The Mouse on the Moon” is peaceful very spicy. Granted there are some itsy-bitsy mistakes with how air inside the Broad Fenwick rocket is maintained since it has no airlock, but for 1963, few people would have realized this. Other keen characters include Maurice Spender (Terry-Thomas, 1911-1990), Cynthia (June Ritchie) and one of the American astronauts who was played by Ed Bishop (1932-2005) . Some sci-fi TV series buffs may remember Ed Bishop as Commander Ed Straker in the 1970 sci-fi TV series “UFO”. Overall, “The Mouse on the Moon” is a fun film and deservers a rating of 4 out of 5 stars.

I bought this movie based on reviews I read here on Amazon.com and wasn’t disappointed. I watched “The Mouse That Roared” first and belief it was silly, but in my view this movie is even better.

Magaret Rutherford is big as the clueless Titanic Duchess, I wish there was more of her in the movie.

Ron Sullen does a large job as the prime minister who is hung up on getting running hot water for his bathtub at any cost.

There was a minute pick off on Dr. Strangelove that I liked. Two ex-German scientists one for the US and one for the USSR give their boss a Nazi salute before catching themselves.

this is a sizable product. yes it is in the english language. this season introduces all the main sailor scouts and records their struggles against queen beryl and their quest to remember their pasts. i have thoroughly enjoyed this series, it has taken me relieve to after school days when i would stare the reveal everyday at 4 in the afternoon. the quality is great- you can narrate these are legit and not recorded from someones tripod!! if you like sailormoon, this is a must have.

I LOOOOOOOOOVED Sailor Moon and I enjoyed watching the episodes with my young female students. I even taped all of season one off of TV, editing out the commercials! I’ve seen all three movies, in Japanese with subtitles. I even believe the soundtrack.

However, Serena was my least common character because she was sooooooo cowardly and selfish and whiny. It was such a wound to have the main female hero be so embarassing to search for. She had very few redeemable qualities. But her Sailor Scout friends, especially Jupiter, Neptune and Venus, were awesome young ladies who were brilliant, talented, savvy in sports, could cook, and even had jobs. They often needed to counsel Serena about how to behave. Mars needed nettle managment Ample TIME! Darien was creepy in an age-inappropriate procedure. But then again, I explain as a parent & teacher.

But since there were very few (and calm not many ) anime about girls who fight demons & place the world (while NOT being so bloody/violent/sexist/sexual) – I speedily forgave Serena for her faults and unbiased learned to savor that mantra:

I loved it, but I have to agree with the other reviewer who said that something gets lost when Clark Gable decides to go to Modern York and moves Claudette Colbert and miniature Jack with him.

Buy,Download, Or Stream Boom Town! Click Here

The fun of the first fraction of the narrate is replaced by an agonizing melodrama, which I also like, but it could have been two different pictures. The first movie would exclaim all about Gable and Tracy’s friendship and their rivalry over Colbert–a kind of Howard Hawks male bonding movie. The key scene in this one would be the hotel room in the “reveal town” in which Tracy and Gable strip to their underwear and Gable starts calling Tracy “Shorty,” a nickname he hates but he loves to have Gable call him. The second film is more of a George Cukor chronicle, for once Hedy Lamarr enters the report as a Dutch lobbyist, this gives Claudette Colbert a whole lot more to exertion about than scrubbing oil stains off Gable’s overalls. Watching this relate recently I found myself more eager with Hedy Lamarr’s role than I had been previously. She’s not “brash” and “American” like the others actors (yes, I know Colbert is French but she has that American buzz thing going on) and she’s languorous and spiteful, speaking of herself modestly as a “high class eavesdropper.” But she’s far from a unpleasant actress, she’s a bit more subtle than the other three (not to mention such certified hams as Chill Wills and Frank Morgan) . Lamarr’s scenes convince you that she was actually a very lustrous girl, didn’t she beget the submarine or something in valid life? You can peruse her brain turning over every possibility in Gable’s long, lanky frame, and the glint in his shadowy eyes.

The movie has a immense cast with some of the best actors that ever graced Hollywood. You have action from the very beginning that holds your attention throughout the whole movie. You can feel the excitment of every oil discovery and the disappointment of every dry-hole. Explain Town has a legend which is simple and is brought together with non complicated characters. The people wre all individuals, with there possess ideas and had the guts and determination to risk everything to effect there dream near right. I like to judge, that was the plot people were like in those days. If you like substantial acting and a movie of primitive adventure with a record that cannot be repeated in these original times, then Notify Town is for the stale fashioned of heart with romance in the soul.

Yes, I idea the first Michael Bay Transformers was dreadful. I wasn’t expecting the sequel to be grand better, but in the support of my mind I was hoping. Michael Bay apparently decided there wasn’t enough crass humor, overt sexuality, unpleasant character development, useless though-provoking parts, explosions, and nameless robots transforming into formless metallic amoebas in the first movie. So now there is more of all that in this one. Of course, it doesn’t beget the movie better, impartial longer.

Buy,Download, Or Stream Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen! Click Here

Negatives:

1) The twins. I don’t reflect I need to account for this.

2) Sam’s parents, excessive amusing relief, no importance to the fable.

3) Mikaela and the Decepticon fem-bot. Ok, I’m a male, yes I consider Meghan Fox is hot. I personally, do not mind seeing her wearing skimpy revealing clothes. But near on, give her some depth. First of all, this movie is being ragged to sell toys to 6-year-olds. There is no need for such overt female objectification in this movie. Seriously, she spends most of the movie with that pouty expression and posing seductively, instead of acting. Same complaint with the “fem-bot”, I felt it was completely unnecessary to the myth.

Buy,Download, Or Stream Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen! Click Here

4) Everyone is comical relief. Ok, I’m all for humorous relief in action movies. But seriously, you can’t develop an action movie around an entire cast of comedians. More than 3 funny relief characters, and you should call it “Giant Robot Movie” (ie. Scary Movie series) .

5) Visual effects. Sometimes less is more. The robots are too complex, too many gripping parts. It is very hard to follow the action trying to follow these overly detailed monochromatic machines as they coast through cities causing random destruction everywhere. In the novel cartoon, the simpler designs were easier to identify and they were distinctively color-coded. Most of the Decepticons observe the same.

6) There are no rules. Basically, Michael Bay is telling us that alien robots can do whatever they please. They can change their alt-forms at will or become giant robo-amoebas. If you hack them to pieces, each fraction can become a completely modern Transformer. Robots can transform into people. Mechanical devices can turn into dust, communicate telepathically with humans, then reform themselves from said dust and resurrect uninteresting Transformers. And other mechanical devices or even a limited section of them can turn earth machines into robots (complete with machine-guns) or resurrect Transformers.

7) Questionable motivations on both sides. So at the ruin of episode 1, this autobot declared he would finish with Sam forever and ever. Ah, how touching. Now Sam decides to go to college and he won’t seize Bumblebee with him. What a jerk. He saved the world once, but now Optimus Prime asks for his back to do it again, and college is more valuable. Why does Sam give the All-Spark sliver to his unrealistically hot girlfriend for safe-keeping, instead of Bumblebee, Optimus or any of those government guys? Why do the Decepticons want to extinguish the sun? I mean really, Cybertron is supposedly destroyed, do they have another planet to inhabit once this solar system is wiped out?

Positives:

1) Peter Cullen and Frank Welker

2) Explosions

Neutral:

1) The battle with Optimus Prime in the woods was really frosty, but it didn’t have nearly the emotional impact of the interesting movie from the 80’s because it was decided early on that they could objective resurrect him before the destroy of the movie. And with no “Hot Rod” character, Sam’s episode of feeling guilty seemed dazzling shallow.

All in all, a bad movie from a notable point of concept. People will like the movie if they are a astronomical fan of loud booms and not optional things like epic. I feel guilty spending money on this misfortune, though.

Okay. Let me fetch this straight. If there was a lawful to refund law if you didn’t like a film, I would lift EVERY SINGLE PENNY I SPENT ON THIS Abominable MOVIE. Oh yeah, the CGI was improbable, but everything else you can flush down the toilet!!! The residence sucked, sexual humor was waaaaay to remarkable, and cursing! The cursing made me feel like I was watching an R rated movie!!!!! There were 2 F bombs in this film I occupy. Very intolerable for a kids movie. Not even Star Creep (2009) had the F bomb. (Well in the front with the Beastie Boys song) But it was barley noticeable! I didn’t even hear it. I went by myself to spy this at the theaters, and I heard one of the mothers of 3 kids complaining it was a very immature movie.

Shame on Micheal Bay, for making such a crappy film, with such crappy actors, and a crappy residence.

To me, Star Plug totally owned this film for this year.

In conclusion, I will not use anymore money for this movie, even if I could exhaust 1 dollar at Redbox to rent it.

Enjoy!

Little House on the Prairie was really arresting along when it reached season 5. Matthew Laborteaux was added as Albert who really added some depth and dimensions to the reveal, especially after Mary loses her observe and moves to Winoka.

The quality of the DVD for some of the episodes, as indicated by other reviewers, ranges from genuine, to okay, to down-right corrupt. I’ve unexcited a number of television DVDs, and I have to say that this is by far the worst one in terms of quality. I mean, how difficult is it to transfer it over correctly? No one else seems to have had the misfortune that Imavision has had.

Another brand is that the editing is horrific. Cramped House episodes always went to commercial breaks with the classic “move out.” You’ll trace in a many of these episodes, there is an immediate slice from a scene. Unfortunately, these episodes are NOT complete. There are many parts missing in various episodes. I know that these scenes are not “lost” or “missing,” because I saw them unprejudiced the other day when the demonstrate was on a television network.

Understand that my complaints are due to the lack of quality that has been set aside into this DVD rather than with a prove that I grew up with and loved to explore every week.

I can only hope that enough complaints may prompt NBC to assign out the kind of DVDs that they are known for. You would reflect they would have effect more grief toward one of the best family shows of all time.

I support anyone who is gloomy with their product to e-mail imavision and let them know. Perhaps with enough response, they might one day be prompted to giving us a truly complete season.

Note: It seems that most of the TV series that are released through NBC Home Entertainment are edited. These include Limited House, Cosby Prove, and Highway to Heaven from what I’ve seen and possibly others.

kinda upsetting when i watched this. i view i would be getting the best episodes that originally aired on TV, with the fractured fairy tales and mr peabody and all. unfortunately, when they say “the best of rocky and bullwinkle” they MEAN Rocky and Bullwinkle, which i mistook for Rocky and Bulllwinkle and Friends. mr peabody and all are not featured on this dvd. smooth comic, collected consuming, but somewhat of a let down.

If you have the seasonal sets 1, 2, & 3 like I do it is hard decision to retract this for unbiased one novel season 4 narrative made up of only 4 chapters. Should season 4 ever reach out, this DVD would impartial be a unpleasant cup coaster.

THE THREE MOOSKETEERS – 8 chapters from season 3, already on DVD.

Rocky & Bullwinkle & Friends – The Complete Third Season

THE GUNS OF ABALONE – 4 chapters from season 4. This is the only reason to reflect this DVD as this yarn has not appeared on any previous VHS or Laserdisc home video release.

A better trouble would me made by e-mailing Classic Media and requesting a chunky season 4 DVD release. It is a short season, only 19 recent episodes. That would not be a tall financial risk for them! Even better would be to pad out the location with the unique Rocky & Bullwinkle chapters shot for the season 5 which re-ran the secondary cartoons.

After `Don’t Study Back’ and Martin Scorsese’s `No Direction Home’ Bob Dylan – No Direction Home what’s left? With a subject as complex and multi-faceted as Dylan, it only makes sense to do more. Unprejudiced observe at Dylan’s memoir/autobiography, `Chronicles’. We were given so considerable in Volume 1, but we know there’s remarkable more to near. And that’s objective from him. To hold all aspects of Dylan, there’s `I’m Not There’. With portrayals by six actors, each representing an aspect of his life, we bag a Dylan mosaic that both blends and clashes.

Buy,Download, Or Stream I’m Not There! Click Here

This is partly right because of Dylan himself, but it’s also legal because of the nature of the project. At its best the movie is an effectively surreal portraiture. At its worst it becomes a lingering unruffled life that speedy needs the next part in the gallery or provides some deplorable reflections. More than half of the songs are Dylan’s originals, but some of the covers are fairly effective, too. I was personally contented to have so many songs from his (subjectively greatest) masterpiece, ‘ Blonde on Blonde’, but there is a wealth of material they employ throughout. Their selection is nearly flawless.

One thing’s for clear it’s comprehensive. Having read the first `Chronicles,’ having seen the aforementioned films, and owning several of his recordings, most of the time director, Todd Haynes, is correct on the money. Not having read Dylan’s maintain thoughts in ‘Tarantula’ or seen his portrayal in ‘Pat Garrett and Billy the Kid’ there are gaps that inevitably are provided for us. Tranquil, the mosaic of Dylan effectiveness depends on the actor as well as the scene.

Buy,Download, Or Stream I’m Not There! Click Here

How does each actor do? Marcus Carl Franklin is Woody, the young, aspiring Dylan. It makes sense to have an African-American play the boy Dylan because in ‘Chronicles’ Chronicles: Volume One (Chronicles) his blues influences are amply distinguished, and we certainly know where the name came from. Remembering Robert Shelton’s reflections of among his first interviews, I notion the circus vagabond aspect of his life was pure folklore, but maybe even that fits. Ben Whisham is Arthur Rimbaud, the rebel Dylan, facing a parole board before he’s illustrious. So far it’s a favorable blend.

Heath Ledger is Robbie Clark or Dylan, the lover and movie star. This is the Dylan whose underbelly is shown to be chauvinistic at times, but also someone who yearns for a stable family life. Picking Ledger makes sense. Christian Bale is sometimes the stage Dylan (Jack Rollins), and, well…sometimes the born-again Christian (Pastor John) . Kate Blanchett is Jude Quinn, the incredulous rebel interviewee who refuses to be pigeon-holed or acknowledge questions based on the elders’ self-centered assumptions. Comparing ‘Don’t Sight Back’ Bob Dylan – Don’t Ogle Support (Single Disc Remastered Edition) she’s wearisome on. Both Jack Rollins and Jude Quinn narrate the controversial period when Dylan went electric, and some of the best scenes are found during this era.

I came afraid and surprised coming into the movie noting there was a woman playing the fragment. I gave myself a pep talk to hold an begin mind, and found her the most convincing Dylan. Ledger and Bale have their moments, but my biggest pickle is that I kept thinking of Heath Ledger and Christian Bale more often than I notion of Dylan. Richard Gere plays the Dylan role in the movie `Pat Garrett…’ Pat Garrett and Billy the Kid (Two-Disc Special Edition) . Here he’s Billy the Kid. He looked like Dylan, but reminded me the least of him.

The supporting players are indispensable. Julianne Moore is one of the best in the present as Alice Fabian (Joan Baez) . Matching her is Charlotte Gainsbourg as Claire (Sarah) his wife. The waggish vignettes with The Beatles and Alan Ginsberg are a joy to seek. Dylan’s manager, Morris Bernstein (Albert Grossman), is represented as every bit as protective, resourceful, and demanding as one would inquire. One of the best scenes is with needling newspaper man, Keenan Jones (or “Mr. Jones” if you will) played by Bruce Greenwood.

This biopic blends more than not. Their methods seem better than the random hop-scotch ‘La Vie en Rose (Extended Version) ‘ tends to do. Especially when we’re at a chic cocktail party, and we peer all kinds of images projected fully on the walls; it’s very well done. Jerry Rabinowicz’s editing does worthy for the move of scenes, except when the ‘Pat Garrett’ scenes lingered too long, and when the criss-cross of time frames and aspects of his life were distracting and lacked focus.

Despite its flaws, ‘I’m Not There’ is a gallant and magnetic portraiture of Bob Dylan. As a plucky experiment it mostly succeeds and satisfies. The very fact that the 2:15 movie makes as few demands as it does on its audience shows that the results are a labor of worship that mostly ring upright.

Director Todd Haynes has reinvented the musician biopic by manipulating its conventions to suit its subject instead of the other map around which is what has always been done in the past. I’m Not There invites us into Bob Dylan’s brain and has peep at the world through his eyes. We also notice how Dylan is perceived by the media and his fans. Because Haynes is pushing the genre to its extremes the film is quite hard to follow at times as we jump all over the state in time and are confronted by various takes on Dylan. However, I judge it is a film that will only improves on subsequent viewings as what Haynes is doing becomes more apparent and understood.

On the first disc there is “An Introduction” featuring four text essays that assist one collect a handle on the film. “Who’s Not There: Six Faces of Dylan” explains who each of the six Dylans the actors are playing and what they describe. “Tangled Up in Clues” claims that Haynes’ film is “an homage to 1960s art films.” It does an genuine job of breaking the film down to its basic elements. “Decoding an Bewitching Enigma” examines each incarnation of Dylan in the film. “Notes on I’m Not There” is written by famed critic Greil Marcus and features a solid analysis of the film.

There is an audio commentary by co-writer/director Todd Haynes. He talks about how he rediscovered Bob Dylan’s music and his life via biographies. Haynes talks about how he pitched the project to Dylan and how he was inspired by the cinema of the 1960s because that was the time period where most of the film was station. Haynes certainly knows his Dylan history and does a huge job analyzing his film and talking about the changes he made while shooting it. This is an curious and informative track.

There is also an option to have the lyrics to the songs that appear on-screen.

The second disc features two theatrical trailers and an unreleased flash card trailer done in the style of the noted “Subterranean Homesick Blues” video with the cast.

There are “Audition Tapes” for Marcus Carl Franklin and Ben Whishaw. They both do a superior job embodying the character they would eventually play.

Also included are two deleted scenes with Blanchett as Dylan messed up on drugs and another with Gere as Dylan during his western phase.

There are four alternate/extended scenes that provide an intelligent, different remove on these scenes.

An “Outtakes” gag reel features the cast and crew goofing around.

“A Tribute to Heath Ledger” features a montage of clips of the slow actor in character and on the residence. It is a sobering reminder of what a large talent has been lost with his tragic death.

“The Red Carpet Premiere” in November 2007 features footage of Haynes and his cast walking the red carpet and interacting with the press.

“Making the Soundtrack” examines how they mixed covers of Dylan’s songs with unique versions by the man himself. Haynes enlisted Sonic Youth’s Lee Ronaldo to supervise some of the music and musicians like John Doe recorded their versions of key songs in the film. Assembling the soundtrack was as unconventional as the film itself.

“Conversation with Todd Haynes” features the director going in detail about his film explaining the title, the origins of the project, and so on. It’s a nice compliment to his commentary track even if there is some overlap.

“Dylanography” includes the one-page proposal Haynes sent Dylan in order to derive his approval for the film. There is also a chronology of the musician’s life, a discography of his extensive output, books he’s written, pages from the director’s notebook, and stills of the various characters.

Finally, The Spiral Road is available on DVD, and that alone is worth the cost of this collection. Amazon indicated the format was standard and I was prepared to bag that. Thankfully, it was issued in widescreen. I agree this is an obscure title, but an safe movie. Grab it while you can.

It is grand to search for Universal release more of Rock Hudson’s films to dvd. And thankfully the three discs in this collection are single sided. I thoroughly enjoyed The Spiral Road – a very qualified drama plot in and around Borneo in 1936 and which also stars Burl Ives. Both are doctors and surprised I had never heard of it until now. By the plot, three of the films, including Spiral Road, are presented in their OAR of 1:85 ( widescreen ) and are Anamorphic. The note on the dvd incorrectly lists Spiral Road as 2:35. If you are a fan of Rock Hudson don’t hesistate to grasp up a copy.

Blood Simple is one of the all-time spacious independent films. As a devotee of this film it goes without saying that I know nearly every line of dialogue and every chop. Well… if you too are a fan, my advice to you is: PASS ON THIS EDITION! I was absolutely unnerved to stare that this film had been re-edited! And NOT for the better. In fact, this was not a fresh edit in the outmoded sense (scene shifting; scene re-edits etc.) . All they did with this version was to simply prick off lines from the existing unusual final slice! That’s honest. They impartial shortened scenes, most often taking the effect of the scene ins and outs (first and last lines in each scene) . For instance, M.Emmet Walsh’s last line to Marty in the VW when he contracts Walsh. Or how about the comic placing of Getz’s cigarette in the stuffed wild boars mouth at Marty’s house? Or the exchange between Samm-Art Williams and the redneck at the juke box. Those lines are now gone completely. And remember that version of The Monkee’s “I’m A Beliver” which was old in that scene? Its been dumped for a Four Tops tune. This is impartial a few in a long list of disturbing changes. As a film editor, I asked myself, what imporovements were made with these recent cuts? The acknowledge is a resounding, NONE!

My point is this. If you lift this DVD expecting the same primitive Blood Simple in a novel, crisp DVD edition, you will be sorely disappointed. You will be constantly distracted by the jarring edits rather than being able to delight in the film… Again, worthless.

Fortunately for everyone a decision was made to re-release Blood Simple in theaters. 16 years ago when it was in first rush I was barely aware of it. There were so many valid reviews of the film I decided to go regain it. Blood Simple was the best film I saw in 2000. Until now there has been no DVD available in the U.S. A very grainy bad quality pan and scan copy is being sold in the UK. It honest isn’t an option to take a pan and scan with this movie. The Coen brothers beautiful cinematography makes burly consume of the entire frame. It is a noir style film so mighty of the imagery is in darkened bars and at night. But the color and light in the movie is really attractive. This film has deserved a profitable treatment and now with this Director’s carve it is finally getting one. One of the outlandish things about this Director’s sever is it is the same length as the modern version. Footage has been taken out and not added. The missing time is made up with an introduction by the Coen Brothers explaining that the film has been re-edited to lift advantage of current technological advances not available when the film was first shot. This is sort of a joke similar to the opening of Fargo where a title card states, “Based upon a factual epic”. Fargo is not based on a upright record. They fair belief it would be a better tale if people view it was proper when they watched it. Ha Ha. Blood Simple’s re-edit was a simple edit to tighten up the paddle which was sometimes a small tiresome in the recent version.

Made for only two million dollars Blood Simple is a shapely achievement, all the more so because it was the Coen’s first film. Stylish photography plays with not objective light and shadow as in most noir, but color as well. But what drives this film is suspense mistrust and double dealing. I smile when I occasionally station a criticism of this film is “its almost too clever” and “too perfect”. Blood Simple is astounding at its clever choreography of events and placement of objects in relation to the actors that really adds to the tension and excitement. If thats too clever then spare me the dumbed down version. I admire it. The acting is quite noble. Its most tantalizing to gaze Frances McDormand, looking grand younger and quite elegant, was obviously talented even encourage then. Blood Simple is often very disturbing. Especially sterling is a creepy scene in a moonlit field spicy two men a burlap sack and a shovel. The violence in this scene as in noteworthy of Blood Simple is largely psychological. It was appealing to view from an Amazon customer from Germany that they have a high quality widescreen DVD available in his country. But while they can steal it and look it, German law forbids export of films which contained violence. He offered to bring a copy in his suitcase as he happened to be visiting my city. We couldn’t work it out logistically but fortunately for the rest of you, you soon won’t have to go to such expansive lengths to gain a copy.

At a time when the James Bond films were calm original and going strong, as were their imitators, British television viewers were watching a 10.5 hour, 12-part miniseries called “Reilly, Ace of Spies.” Based on the biography by Robin Bruce Lockhart, this inviting series is now available in a boxed area of 4 A&E DVDs (AAE-71748) and makes for some really spirited viewing.

With Sam Neill in the title role, we follow the career of the man who taught British intelligence that if ruthlessness gets the job done, then ruthless spies are what they need. Sidney Reilly, an assumed name as is learned later, remains dependable to friends but not altogether to his employers and casual acquaintances. And if he treats his wives questionably when his job gets in the design, he makes up for it by treating all the other women with tall feeling and tenderness.

Having tiny patience with incompetence on any level, he gets a substantial contract for battleships for Russia away from a British firm and to a German firm for which he works, he gets oil concessions, he steals plans by posing as a fire expert in Germany, and he finally tries to build himself head of a provisional government that will overthrow the Bolshevik regime. And so on.

Along the device he runs into two immense villains: Basil Zaharov (Leo McKern, who can say more with a peruse than most actors can with a page of text), and the frosty head of Soviet Intelligence Felix Dzerzhinsky (Tom Bell), who has dwelling up a phony organization that pretends to be against Stalin and rakes in millions from rich anti-Bolsheviks all over the world. A ghastly moment comes when Stalin (David Burke) orders all in the group to be shot, because even following orders to appear disloyal “is no excuse”! Which is what happens when personal power is far more valuable than human beings.

Other major characters are Reilly’s boss Cummings (Norman Rodway), his fellow agent Hill (Hugh Fraser), and an astute oriental police officer (David Suchet) .

Like another two series about spies, “Tinker Tailor” and “Smiley’s People,” the account is complex, you never quite know at first who is who and who is lying more than the others. Except for some possibly supernatural business towards the kill, you peruse with both fascination and a vague disgust that this is what many people are really like-and that, from what we glimpse, it is not the meek who are doing any inheriting.

Fascinating and tantalizing viewing on a definitely “adult” level (i.e., lots of violence and a lot of naked flesh, the latter of which is dazzling gratuitous) . Neill does a apt job of portraying the complex and highly ambiguous main character.

There is an keen documentary of the true Reilly as a bonus feature, which should be seen after the series, not before.

Reilly – Ace of Spies is the best extended series of observe films ever made, in my notion, for many reasons.

First, the cast of this twelve episode account is uniformly valid beginning with Sam Neil as Sidney Reilly, a Russian born jew named Sigismund Rosenblum, who goes to work for the British Secret Service and takes the name Reilly because he thinks the Irish are well common all over the world. And Reilly travels over noteworthy of the world doing the dirty work of the British government. Neil brings complexity to his role as an agent who believes the demolish justifies the means. Machiavelli would be overjoyed with Neil’s performance.

Leo McKern as Basil Zaharov, an arms dealer with morals similar to Reilly’s and ability almost the equal of Reilly, is the best of an outstanding supporting cast. McKern is edifying throughout the series. Zaharov goes head to head with Reilly and their conflicts result in many dramatic and surprising encounters.

Next is Tom Bell as Felix Dzerzhinsky, head of the Russian secret police at the beginning of the Russian Revolution of 1917. Bell is totally convincing as he deals first with Lenin, in a graceful performance by Kenneth Cranham, and then Stalin, played by David Burke. Dzerzhinsky loves Lenin, hates Stalin, and respects Reilly, his nemesis and more than his equal. Reilly wants to overthrow Lenin and assign himself in Lenin’s dwelling. He almost succeeds.

Norman Rodway and Peter Egan are both convincing as Reilly’s control officers in the British Secret Service. Spying is a tainted business and we are never definite who will betray whom.

Women, particulary Reilly’s wives, played by Jeananne Crowley, wife #1, Celia Gregory, #2, and Laura Davenport, #3, play a supporting role to the ace of spies, but each wife figures prominently in the ongoing sage. All give effective performances.

2. A short biography of Sidney Reilly is presented as the final presentation on Disc #4. It is apparent that the producers have stayed fairly finish to historical fact. Even without the history lesson the epic stands on its occupy merits and is totally attractive and genuinely enthralling. I planned to peep two episodes at a time, but often found myself playing a third episode to earn out what would happen next, and then watching the scenes from the next installment to wet my appetite for the next point to. The only films I have seen that compare favorably with The Ace of Spies are Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Discover and Smiley’s People. I must admit that Alec Guiness, as George Smiley, is a better actor than Sam Neil, but I judge the Ace of Spies series is at least as noble as the Smiley stories, with the added serve of great more history delivered in the Ace series. Reilly – Ace of Spies is a immense anecdote from beginning to slay.

3. The production values of this series are proper. It feels like we have been transported in time to the first 25 years of the 20th Century. From the offices of the Secret Service in London, to Port Arthur on the Russian Pacific Sail, to St. Petersburg, Moscow, Paris, etc., attention has been paid to the smallest detail. These films perceive and feel like a ample budget production.

4. The only negative reviews of Ace of Spies on Amazon report to the DVD transfer, which was objective profitable enough not to spoil the display for me. Unless the viewer is especially particular about the quality of DVD transfer, I recommend Reilly – Ace of Spies heartily. This is high quality entertainment from beginning to raze.
